Summary: These studies in phonetics and linguistics consist of broadcasts and articles written on various occasions over quite a long period of time; they cover a span of twenty-eight years, in fact. That might seem bound to make them a somewhat random and heterogeneous collection. However, they do in fact represent a continuity of interest during this time in certain aspects of the two subjects, or more exactly, often, of the borderland between them: matters such as the functions of language in society, problems of writing and transcription, and the traditions of linguistic thought. The papers are not, therefore, arranged chronologically, but are roughly grouped according to topic. I have selected for inclusion papers which are not too technical or specialized, but are rather, I hope, of sufficient general interest to warrant their inclusion in a series such as this.
