The teachers of child development in various colleges and universities throughout India have long felt the need for a textbook suitable for their classes. An attempt has been made to trace child development in India chronologically in order to enable the reader to gain a feeling of continuity from one stage of development to the next. In this volume we have tried to present a view of the child at each stage of his growth: from the pre-natal to the sixth year along with some of the ways in which various factors in the Indian culture influence his development. We have been concerned with the practical implications for child-rearing in India. Few studies of young Indian children have appeared in scientific journals. Most of these have been in the areas of child health and nutrition. These studies as well as other investigations from psycho logy, sociology, cultural anthropology etc. have been utilized. The need for research is urgent. It is hoped that this book will be useful and of interest not only to students and teachers of child development but also to parents, parents-to-be, clinicians and researchers.
