"Poisons on our platter Modern farming and chemical use goes hand in hand. Surging urban demand for non-traditional crops including flowers and exotic vegetables encourage famers to increase yield using synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. The cocktail of chemicals applied without necessary precautions damages the health of both producers and consumers and the integrity of ecosystems equally. 'Short term gains imply long term costs' is not a rule remembered well."

ಆಧುನಿಕ ಕೃಷಿ ಎಂದರೆ ಧಾರಾಳವಾಗಿ ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕಗಳ ಬಳಸುವುದು ಎಂದೇ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು. ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೂವುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿದೇಶೀ ತರಕಾರಿಗಳು ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ
ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕವಲ್ಲದ ಬೆಳೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಬಲು ಬೇಡಿಕೆ ಇದ್ದು ಇವುಗಳ ಇಳುವರಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಲು ರೈತರು ರಸಗೊಬ್ಬರಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕೀಟನಾಶಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಲು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಿದಂತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.. ಅಗತ್ಯ ಮುನ್ನೆಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲದೇ ಈ ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಅದು ಬೆಳೆ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ರೈತನ ಮತ್ತು ಗ್ರಾಹಕರ ಆರೋಗ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹಾನಿಗೊಳಿಸುವುದೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಗುರುತರವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಸರ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ಅಖಂಡತೆಯನ್ನೂ ಹಾಳುಗೆಡವುತ್ತವೆ. 'ಅಲ್ಪಾವಧಿಯ ಲಾಭಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋದರೆ ದೀರ್ಘಾವಧಿಯ ಬೆಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೆರಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ 'ಎಂಬ ಮುನ್ನೆಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ನೆನಪಿನಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ.
