Chapter 1 provides a general look at the functions and organs of a land plant, with some of the basic evidence for what different parts of the plant do. For persons who have had previous contact with elementary biology much of this material should, naturally, constitute review. Chapter 2 deals with cellular organization of plants, and pertinent cell physiology. In succeeding chapters the basis of each of the plant's specialized activities is explored more deeply. Details of anatomical structure, and the extensive terminology connected therewith, are emphasized only insofar as they are important to the understanding of functional principles. It is hoped that the reader will take away not only an appreciation of basic principles that are presently understood, but also some notion of the important gaps that remain in our understanding of plant function and how current research is attacking them.
