"Booming Bengaluru, shrinking farms Escalating land value and conversion to non-agricultural uses have drastically reduced the size of farm holdings in the peripheries of Bengaluru. To maintain profitability, farmers resort to intensive agricultural practices, often cultivating new crops. Most such farms rely on household labour and liberal use of ground water and agrochemicals. Krishnappa of Obichudahalli village of south Bengaluru, for instance, shifted from 4 acres of ragi to 0.5 acres of vegetables. How long will his last piece of farm land remain so is highly uncertain though."

ಭೂಮಿ ಬೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೀವ್ರ ಏರಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃಷಿಯೇತರ ಬಳಕೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಭೂ ಪರಿವರ್ತನೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ನಗರದ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃಷಿ ಹಿಡುವಳಿಗಳ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವನ್ನು ತೀವ್ರವಾಗಿ ಕಡಿಮೆಗೊಳಿಸಿವೆ.ಬೇಸಾಯದಿಂದ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಲಾಭಬರುವಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು, ರೈತರು ಲಾಭತರುವ ಕೃಷಿ ಪದ್ಧತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅವಲಂಬಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಹೊಸ ಬೆಳೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಕೃಷಿ ಭೂಮಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಯವರೆಲ್ಲ ದುಡಿಯಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಹೆಚ್ಚುಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅಂತರ್ಜಲ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃಷಿ ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ : ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಓಬಿಚುಡಾಹಳ್ಳಿ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ಪನವರು,

೪ ಎಕರೆ ಹೊಲದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಗಿಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರು ಇಂದು ಅರ್ಧ ಎಕರೆ ಹೊಲದಲ್ಲಿ ತರಕಾರಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಷ್ಟಾದರೂ ಅವರು ಈ ಜಮೀನು ತುಂಡನ್ನು ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಮಯದ ವರೆಗೆ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಇರಬಲ್ಲರು ಎಂಬುದು ಅನಿಶ್ಚಿತವಾಗಿದೆ.
