500 ## - GENERAL NOTE |
General note |
English is the principal world language and, all over the world, provision for its teaching is an important matter of government policy. The training of teachers of English can greatly affect the future of education as a whole, especially where English is itself the medium of instruction. This book brings together summaries of British thinking and experience, in Britain itself, in the Commonwealth and elsewhere. It is partly in the form of reports on successful projects (in Kenya, the Sudan, India and Ghana) drawing out the implications for future practice; partly in the form of more general discussion. Themes touched on are: the contribution of linguistics, the place of literature, relationships with syllabus reform, examinations, in-service training, standards of attainment, local varieties of English. No single approach is advocated: all the writers speak from their own experience, so that if there is a shared attitude, it is pragmatism. But there is in these studies a wealth of knowledge, some of it expressed in very practical terms.

|
