500 ## - GENERAL NOTE
General note
Labour law has become a specialised branch of law especially since the ILO Conventions, which are accepted as international standards, are to be brought under the law of the member countries of ILO. Apart from such standards law, in Indian conditions, labour law covers the industrial relations set up too. In addition, many of the social security schemes are also brought under law in this country. Therefore, it becomes necessary for those work ing in trade unions, both in the leadership and functional positions, to get themselves acquainted with the labour law.
In India, there are innumerable labour laws, and even to catalogue them is a difficult task. In such circumstances, trade unionists find it difficult to keep trace of the provisions of such laws even in broader terms though this knowledge is very essential to them for making reference to the law while dealing with the problems of the workers.
The teaching of law to trade unionists in workers' education classes has also become a problem as it is difficult to explain the labour laws in a simple language. In order to meet this contingency, as also to provide an easy reference book to the unionists, Maniben Kara Institute has taken the initiative to prepare this booklet containing, in capsule from, the contents of important labour laws of which trade unionists ought have a minimum knowledge.
In addition to the major central labour laws, a couple of state laws have also been included in this booklet since some of their provisions are likely to set pattern for central legislation. The Institute realises the limitations of this venture, and even apprehends that by the time this publication reaches the readers, some of the laws might be subjected to further amendments. Even then, Maniben Kara Institute resolved to make this humble begining.
Let us hope, this booklet will be of some help to the trade unionists and others in acquainting themselves with the rules of the game in the industrial field.

Labour law has become a specialised branch of law especially since the ILO Conventions, which are acceptd as international standards, are to be brought under the law of the member countries of ILO.
